2026 World Cup: an unwanted record is already under threat!
But what on earth has gotten into the defenders at this 2026 World Cup?
After just one week of competition, the tournament has already produced seven own goals. The all-time World Cup record is 12, set at the 2018 edition in Russia, according to Opta.

With four more weeks of competition still to go, this rather unflattering mark looks well on course to be broken in North America this summer.
On Friday night, Australia took the total to seven by conceding the opening goal with an own goal against the United States (Cameron Burgess, 11th minute).
All left feet.
