The second week of the preseason is critical for several Miami Dolphins players on the roster bubble.
With competition intensifying for one of the 53 roster spots , veterans and younger players alike need solid outings against the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons .
Here are three Dolphins players who could be on the roster bubble entering Week 2 of the preseason.
Quarterback Cam Miller
There's a question about whether the Dolphins' backup quarterback is currently on their roster. Both Quinn Ewers and Miller have struggled during training camp and the preseason, so there's a case for releasing both players during final roster cuts.
Miller completed 3 of 11 passes for 39 yards and threw two interceptions in last week's preseason loss to the Washington Commanders . With Ewers sidelined by a hamstring injury, Miller should receive plenty of snaps against the Giants on Saturday afternoon.
This is Miller's best opportunity to prove he deserves a spot on the Dolphins' final roster as Malik Willis ' primary backup.
Wide receiver Tahj Washington
The Dolphins don't have many proven playmakers at receiver, but they have plenty of bodies at the position, which could make Washington the odd man out.
With Caleb Douglas impressing during training camp and Malik Washington, Jalen Tolbert and Kevin Coleman Jr. seemingly locked into roster spots, Tahj Washington will need a strong showing during the joint practice with the Giants and Saturday's game. He was targeted three times against the Commanders but did not record a catch.
Safety Lonnie Johnson Jr.
An unspecified injury kept Johnson out for much of training camp. He played 30 snaps against the Commanders, including 10 on special teams.
Throughout his career, Johnson has primarily been a special-teams contributor, although he has made 22 starts. The Dolphins could move forward with Dante Trader Jr. and Zayne Anderson and release Johnson unless he delivers standout performances over the next couple of weeks.
