Following the Jacksonville Jaguars' performance in Week 2 of the preseason against the Carolina Panthers , we have three takeaways from Friday's game.
Let's dive in.
Penalties were a problem
The starters did not play, so penalty issues in the preseason don't mean that will carry over into the regular season. That said, throughout training camp, penalties have persisted. Penalties were also an issue for this Jaguars team last year, with Jacksonville averaging the fourth-most penalties per game.
Penalties make everything more difficult. They put the offense behind the sticks, wipe out big plays, or give an opponent short fields and manageable down and distances.
CJ Williams and Josh Cameron continue to impress
This isn't anything new, with the Jaguars' Day 3 rookies standing out since they arrived in Jacksonville during offseason programs. But it's getting to the point where, even with a very talented receiver room, finding some opportunities for Cameron and Williams in season may have to be on Liam Coen's to-do list.
The duo finished Friday's game with a combined six receptions for 63 yards on somewhat limited playing time. What's also encouraging is that we see them making catches in different parts of the field. That ability will provide Coen with more ways to potentially utilize them.
What do we make of the pass rush?
Last week, the Jaguars' pass rush depth did well to get after the quarterback. This week, not as much. Jacksonville finished the game with no sacks and five quarterback hits -- four of which were produced by either linebackers or cornerbacks. Some of the pressures that were generated ended up being from blitzers.
Of course, the outlook of the pass rush unit changes when Josh Hines-Allen , Travon Walker , and Arik Armstead are on the field. But at heavily rotated positions like defensive end and tackle, depth is important, and whether or not the Jaguars had enough pass rush juice from those rotational players has been an unknown throughout the offseason.
While there have certainly been flashes from players like BJ Green, Danny Striggow , Ruke Orhorhoro , and Wesley Williams, will there be consistency?
