San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has apparently always been a fan of cornerback Nate Hobbs .
Shanahan told reporters at the NFL owners' meeting this week in Phoenix that the 49ers tried to trade for Hobbs when he played for the Las Vegas Raiders . Hobbs played four years for the Raiders from 2021 to 2024 before he spent this past season with the Green Bay Packers . He signed a one-year deal with San Francisco this offseason.
This new wrinkle makes the 49ers' pursuit of Hobbs clearer. Hobbs only played 358 snaps in 2025 for the Packers, but he was a multi-game starter during his stint with the Raiders.
The 49ers could always use secondary support, and now they have another chess piece to use in Hobbs. Per Pro Football Focus, Hobbs played the majority of his career snaps in the slot, out wide and in the box. Deommodore Lenoir , Renardo Green and Upton Sout in the secondary.
