The Denver Broncos ' offseason program is underway, and — as usual in the Sean Payton era — there's been little fanfare around the spring activities.
Broncos veterans reported for the start of weight training and conditioning last week, but there were no slow-motion player arrival videos or workout photos posted by the team. That's the Payton way.
Over the weekend, Payton spoke at rookie minicamp, and media members were given a limited window to speak to rookies in the locker room, but there were no introductory press conferences or podium sessions for the team's draft picks. Payton wants the club to do its talking primarily on the field.
Still, fans are excited about the new rookies, and there were a few takeaways to be gleaned from the rookie minicamp. Here are five quick takeaways from the weekend (not all of them rookie-related).
Broncos rookie minicamp takeaways
1. Bo Nix 'doing great' in recovery: After undergoing a clean-up ankle procedure, Nix is " doing great ," according to Payton, who noted that the follow-up procedure was "not a surprise." Payton expects the QB to have some level of participation in June, and he said Nix will be full-speed in time for training camp, which typically begins in late July.
2. Sean Payton happy about George Paton's contract: The Broncos gave their GM a five-year contract just before the start of rookie minicamp, and Payton was clearly pleased about it. "We love the grind together," Payton said. "He's a tremendous asset and all, and he's very good at what he does. I think we complement each other. I am super excited for him."
3. Payton pleased with tryout quarterbacks: Denver hosted two tryout QBs at rookie minicamp: rookie E.J. Warner ( Kurt Warner's son ) and veteran journeyman Nathan Peterman . "[B]oth quarterbacks have done a good job," Payton said. "When you get a bunch of this offense, and they've been in different systems. One's obviously older, the other one is young, but they've both done a really good job." Payton said the team has discussed the possibility of signing a fourth QB, and he noted that Warner reminds him of Chase Daniel (who had two stints under Payton in New Orleans ).
4. Jonah Coleman made a good first impression: The pads aren't on yet, so there's only so much a rookie can do this time of year, but Coleman looked about as good as an RB can in the spring. "He's in good shape," Payton said. "There are certain things you want to, when you're in this type of drill setting, you want to give him. Then he's picked it up well. He's looked really good."
5. Surprisingly, Caleb Lohner is a big winner this spring: Lohner was among three eligible "first-year" players who participated in rookie minicamp over the weekend. Lohner, a 6-7 former basketball player, was picked by the Broncos in the seventh round of last year's NFL draft out of Utah. "He looks entirely different in this camp," Payton said of the tight end. Payton indicated that fans and media members will also take notice of Lohner later this summer. "[Y]ou guys will see him this June," Payton said. "Yes, he's been impressive."
Up next on Denver's offseason calendar are organized team activities (OTAs) in early June, followed by a mandatory minicamp before a summer break ( view the full schedule ).
