After being swept by the New York Knicks , the Philadelphia 76ers are making a sweeping change. They are firing Daryl Morey , according to reports from both Shams Charania and ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel. However, head coach Nick Nurse is staying put.
"BREAKING: Daryl Morey is out as president of basketball operations with the Philadelphia 76ers after six seasons, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote. "Morey and 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer met on Tuesday evening in Philadelphia and the decision was made to part ways."
Morey was hired by the 76ers in 2020 to be the primary decision-maker in the front office. Morey's biggest impact on the team was the trade for James Harden and the decision to sign Paul George . However, Morey's decision-making has been heavily criticized over the last few years. They have been a playoff contender for most of the president's tenure, yes, but even an Eastern Conference Finals has been completely out of reach for them.
Perhaps the final straw for 76ers fans was this season, when Morey and the front office traded Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder . McCain was one of the early standouts for Philly in the 2024-25 season, but the rookie guard suffered a torn meniscus that ended his campaign. Many expected McCain to continue being part of the Sixers' future the following season, even after VJ Edgecombe 's breakout. However, Morey instead traded McCain to the defending champions, where he's now firmly a part of the rotation.
The 76ers, meanwhile, had to claw their way into the playoffs. Injuries and absences certainly played a big part in their struggles: George missed a lot of games due to a PED suspension, while Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid dealt with injuries throughout the year. Despite their injuries, they were still able to make it to the playoffs after the Play-In Tournament. In the first round, they overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat the Boston Celtics .
Nick Nurse will remain as the head coach of the team moving forward. His record with the 76ers is 116 wins and 130 losses.
