The Philadelphia 76ers ' playoff run in 2026 was marked by the determination and subsequent physical decline of Joel Embiid .

After undergoing an appendectomy, the superstar center hurried back to the court for a crucial Game 4 against the Boston Celtics , ultimately struggling through a second-round exit against the New York Knicks .
However, the toll of hastily returning to play was significant.
According to reports from Derek Bodner, Embiid revealed that his core remained weak following the surgery, leading to a series of compensatory injuries.
He noted that his hip and adductor were "out of place," making the transition to the intensity of playoff basketball a strenuous physical challenge that he battled through until the very end.

Despite the team's early playoff elimination and Embiid's ongoing health issues, trading the former MVP is currently considered unlikely , as reported by The New York Times.
Several factors contribute to his "untouchable" status.
First, his extensive injury history combined with his large contract makes it nearly impossible for the 76ers to secure a trade package that accurately reflects his on-court value.
Observers pointed out a decline in his defensive mobility this season, but he still remains one of the most dominant offensive players in the league.
For the 76ers' front office, Embiid is worth far more as the cornerstone of their franchise than any collection of assets or draft picks they would likely receive in a skewed trade market.

The season ended on a disappointing note with a 144-114 blowout loss to the Knicks, during which a visibly hobbled Embiid simply ran out of energy .
In his postgame press conference, he sparked speculation about his future in Philadelphia with a cryptic message.
While expressing enthusiasm about a healthy 2027 season, he admitted to ESPN that he was uncertain about the team's upcoming roster changes, stating, "I don't even know if I'm gonna be here."
Whether this comment reflects the team's uncertain direction or a moment of post-loss frustration, it leaves the 76ers facing a summer filled with questions.
