Floridalinebacker Aaron Chiles isn't ready to write off the Gators' season after consecutive losses to Missouri and South Carolina, but he knows the team cannot afford to repeat the mistakes that contributed to last year's disappointing campaign.
The Gators dropped to 4-2 with a 38-19 homecoming loss to South Carolina on Saturday, struggling to get off the field on third down and failing to force a turnover for the second consecutive week.

Chiles emphasized that Florida's defensive problems are not solely the responsibility of the coaching staff, challenging his teammates to win individual matchups, communicate more effectively and take ownership of their performances.
Chiles also discussed the importance of finishing games, the message Dallas Wilson delivered in the locker room and why Florida's aspirations extend well beyond reaching a bowl game. With a trip to Texas approaching, he believes the Gators still have an opportunity to accomplish their goals if they can avoid a losing streak.
Here's everything Chiles had to say.

What is Florida's mindset after losing two consecutive games?
Yeah, of course it's tough, but we can't let these two losses determine our season. We understand how last year went. We started losing a little bit, and it was kind of a roller-coaster effect.

But we lost two games, man. I don't believe it's the end of the world. I believe we've got another opportunity next week against Texas to put on a good performance. So we're just looking forward to next week.
What needs to improve defensively after the South Carolina loss?
I feel like we did a pretty good job on first and second down, but when it came to third down, we struggled to get them off the field. We struggled a lot.
So I feel like we've got to go back to the drawing board and keep working, keep getting better, improve our chemistry, improve our communication and just defensively improve everything.

It's not necessarily the calls or the coaches, but it's the players. At some point, we've got to win one-on-ones, and we've got to perform.
Have the two losses affected Florida's confidence?
It's always tough to lose games. Nobody wants to lose, of course. But I would say we can't lose confidence, especially in this league. We have a whole other half of the season to go. Losing confidence just isn't an option.
So like I said, we've got Texas next week. We've got to get back together, get back to work and get ready for that game.
How important is it for Florida's defense to start creating turnovers again?
That's a big problem. Defense, that's one thing we preach, and that's one of the keys to victory, just takeaways.

So I feel like we've got to do a better job, starting in practice. We've got to do a better job attacking the ball, going after the ball, and it'll translate to the game.
What does Florida need to do to finish games more effectively?
Oh yeah, that's a big thing, just finishing. And that starts in the weight room, at practice. We just have to finish everything we do. I feel like we try to start off fast, but in the second half, once again, we just start to throw it away.
So that's the big thing we've got to do. We've got to do a better job of finishing, a better job of wrapping up, a better job of straining.

What was the mood in Florida's locker room after the loss?
Of course, this was a tough loss. Losing in front of our fans, home crowd, homecoming is, of course, tough. But one thing we do need is the leaders to step up.
And one guy that said something was Dallas Wilson, and we need a lot of other guys like that to step up and use their voice.
That's a big thing. And like Coach said, it's a player-led team. So this team is going to go as far as we take it. As players, we have to step up, and we have to take control.
What did Dallas Wilson tell his teammates after the game?
Basically, he said it's on the players. He said we can't blame the coaches. The coaches are not going to be out there playing for us.

It's not necessarily calls, but it's execution on the players' part. So during practice, during the week, we have to be super focused, super locked in to get the outcome we want.
Has Florida's defense regressed compared with last season?
I wouldn't say necessarily regressed. I feel like we have our own things that we need to work on, but we have another half of the season.
So we just have to get back to the drawing board, get back to work, come together as a team and keep going.
How does Florida prevent two consecutive losses from snowballing?
Of course, nobody wants to lose. So right now, it's tough. Everybody's kind of on the loss, and we're going to assess it tomorrow, go over the film tomorrow. But in this league, we lost two games. I feel like all of our goals are still in front of us and still available for us to get.

But the snowball thing, we just can't let that happen. We see how last year went, and a bowl game is not what we're looking for. We want to be in the playoffs. So in order to do that, we've got to brush this off, understand our mistakes, fix them and get back to the drawing board, get back to work.
Does facing Texas provide an opportunity for Florida to make a statement?
Definitely. Of course, we lost these two games, but it'll only be right if we win this next one. I feel like this is a big game, circled, and we're looking for our best performance in this next game. Get back to work and just keep going.
