Chris Paul is no longer with the Los Angeles Clippers .
The veteran guard, who returned to the Clippers for his final season with the intention of retiring with the team, posted a cryptic Instagram story that read, "Just found out I'm being sent home," sparking rumors that he and the team might part ways.
Moments later, it was first reported by Senior NBA insider Chris Haynes that the Clippers are indeed parting ways with Paul, a week after giving him a tribute video at the Intuit Dome following the 21-year veteran's confirmation that this would be his farewell NBA campaign.
Clippers' statement
Moments after Paul's post and the speculation that followed, Clippers General Manager Lawrence Frank released a statement to the media confirming that the team is indeed parting ways with the veteran playmaker.
"We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team. We will work with him on the next step of his career," Frank said . "Chris is a legendary Clipper who has had a historic career."
Frank also went on to address the Clippers' current struggles.
"I want to make one thing very clear. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. There are a lot of reasons why we've struggled. We're grateful for the impact Chris has made on the franchise."
This has truly been a nightmare of a season for the Clippers, who were projected to be one of the top teams in the West due to the addition of players like Paul, Bradley Beal and John Collins , among others.
Unfortunately, injuries, along with the roster additions not panning out, have significantly contributed to the team's poor start.
Nonetheless, dropping perhaps one of the most beloved players in franchise history during what was supposed to be his retirement tour is definitely not a good look.
Social Media reacts
After the news broke of Paul's exit from the Clippers, social media was flooded with reactions, all of which were shock, confusion and dismay.
Letting Paul go when the team is already riddled with injuries and lacking veteran leadership is puzzling to say the least. With players like Beal and Bogdan Bogdanovic sidelined, Paul had recently seen more playing time, making this move all the more surprising.
Others are speculating that there's more to the story, and fans could get more answers soon.
The Clippers are currently in Atlanta and will play the Hawks Wednesday night in the second game of a five-game road trip.
With everything that's going on, coupled with the Clippers' uninspired play as of late, it could be a long and rough stretch for the team.
