After undergoing ankle surgery in Alabama last week, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter .
"The recovery, not the surgery, is thought to be the most challenging part of this injury. Nix is not supposed to put any weight on his ankle for at least four weeks, and he will miss 12 weeks altogether before he can return to activity," Schefter wrote for ESPN.
Nix suffered the injury on the game-winning drive of a 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs last weekend.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday morning that the surgery revealed "limited ligament damage and no joint surface damage ," which is good news.
The Broncos officially placed Nix on injured reserve on Saturday , ruling him out for the rest of the postseason. Nix won't be eligible (or healthy) to return for Super Bowl LX if Denver makes it that far.
Nix is expected to be "largely recovered" in time for the team's offseason program in the spring. Despite his history of ankle injuries, doctors said this latest injury is "nothing to be concerned about long term," according to Schefter.
With Nix sidelined, the Broncos are set to start Jarrett Stidham against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game on Sunday.
"I can't express how much this team and organization mean to me and how much I believe in them," Nix wrote on social media . "I couldn't be more proud of our guys. I couldn't be more confident in Jarrett. And I couldn't be more excited for what's next."
