If Adam Thielen was Minnesota's general manager, the first thing he'd do is trade for a quarterback who fits head coach Kevin O'Connell's offensive scheme.
"Quarterback. Right away. As fast as you can," Thielen said Monday on KFAN's Power Trip Morning Show . "The reason why I say that is because I believe there's a couple of guys, and I don't know if this is real, but I believe there's a few guys out there that you could legitimately trade for and then could be a long-term answer. Could be a guy that's just entering his prime and has the ability to be here for a long time."
Thielen said Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Daniel Jones of the Colts would be ideal.
"You look at a guy like Justin Herbert. I think even a guy like Daniel Jones, as weird as that sounds, could maybe get him for cheap, and a guy that obviously both sides know and could really make a difference in this offense," Thielen said. "Those guys are fits for what Kevin wants to do. Those guys fit exactly how he wants to play this game: being able to drop back, to be able to make all the throws, to be able to understand the offense, to really open up the playbook and do what Kevin does so great, and that's scheming up things and really allowing the quarterback to throw it all over the field."
Jones, if he's made available, would be a lot cheaper to acquire than Herbert. But Jones' contract complicates a trade because he's in the first year of a two-year, $88 million contract that includes $50 million guaranteed. However, he's signed through 2027 and Minnesota will have to pay for a quarterback one way or another in the spring.
The Vikings have until Tuesday, Nov. 10, to make a trade. If they don't, perhaps Murray will be on a short leash with Carson Wentz prepared to play as the backup.
"I would imagine, and this is totally just my opinion, Kevin's getting a little frustrated with the quarterback play," Thielen said. "I would imagine that if things are going well, you're hearing the boo birds, things like that, yeah, there's probably a plan to put someone else in.
"But at the same time, I don't see that happening."
