- Akron Zips basketball is stunned by ejection but regoups to beat UMass
An "air punch" thrown by Akron Zips wing Evan Mahaffey and UA basketball's response to his subsequent ejection stole the show during an eventful night at Rhodes Arena .
Before Akron defeated UMass 99-92 on Feb. 13, UA honored Zips legend Isaiah "Big Dog" Johnson by unveiling his jersey number — 23 — in the rafters.

During the game, Akron welcomed former Zips coach Bob Huggins back to campus with a scoreboard tribute and showed him sitting in the stands. Huggins also visited the team during shootaround earlier in the day.
And by prevailing, Akron clinched a berth in next month's Mid-American Conference Tournament and extended its home winning streak to 29 games, which is tied for the longest in the nation and dates to the 2024-25 season.

"They're saying the rule technically is air or no air. They've got a tough job to do, especially in a game like that that's that physical. But they made the decision that based on the rules they thought that merited an ejection, which if that's an ejection, we need a rule change."
Akron Zips news: UA basketball score, recap and highlights vs. UMass
After a brief tussle with UMass players, Akron Zips’ Eric Mahaffey (4) embraces his brother, Evan (12) during a game Feb. 13, 2026, in Akron.
Groce said he had never previously heard of an "air punch" rule.
The unusual sequence unfolded with 16:27 left in the second half. As Mahaffey held the ball, UMass guard Danny Carbuccia tried to grab it to gain possession. After a struggle between the two players, Mahaffey remained on his feet, and Carbuccia was on the ground. It's when Mahaffey quickly threw an "air punch" toward Carbuccia without coming close to connecting. Mahaffey and UMass guard Marcus Banks Jr. then engaged in a heated exchange of words, and members of both teams stepped between the players.

A marathon of an officiating review ensued. Groce said during the review neither he nor the person who assists him with replays behind UA's bench had any idea an ejection was a possibility. It's probably because the "air punch" was difficult to detect. CBS Sports Network's TV cameras caught it. When the officials finally delivered their verdict, Groce was visibly incensed, and the Zips were stunned.
"I was definitely surprised," Akron point guard Tavari Johnson said. "I don't think Evan would purposely throw a punch, but, I mean, it's what happened, and we just had to move on and next man up and we were ready to adjust without Evan, even though he was a big loss to the team."

After the review, Johnson made two foul shots, and UMass guard K'Jei Parker split two free throws. When the dust settled, UA had a 53-48 edge. The Zips never relinquished the lead.
"I thought they showed great toughness and really elevated the energy level of our team after that happened and kind of picked up for Evan not being out there," Groce said.

"I told him, 'Hey, man, this is all of us. You know, you're not in this by yourself,'" Groce said. "I thought it was a tough call, a tough ejection. But, again, the referees have a hard job to do, and that was the judgment that they made based on the rules.
"Apparently [the air punch is] a rule. And, again, tough game to officiate tonight with a lot of free throws shot tonight, obviously — 60 free throws."
