Akron Zipsvs Texas Tech prediction: March Madness first round
Akron will be tempting to pick as a Cinderella team because of it does almost everything well, but to win its first ever March Madness game the Zips probably will need to get hot from 3-point range. They know 3s can be a great equalizer, so don't expect them to be shy about putting it up from deep.

Still, No. 12 seed Akron (29-5) faces a big challenge against No. 5 seed Texas Tech (22-10).
One thing the Zips do have going for them is coach John Groce, who already has led a MAC team to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 — his 2011-12 Ohio Bobcats defeated Michigan 65-60 and South Florida 62-56, and took North Carolina to overtime before being eliminated in a 73-65 loss.
Can Akron put together a historic run? Yes, but only if the Zips can go on a tear from behind the 3-point arc.
Seth Davis of CBS predicted the Zips will advance to the Sweet 16, citing Tech's injury issues. He also predicted Hofstra will beat Alabama to set up a second-round game against Akron.

"I like Akron to beat Texas Tech with their injury issues," said Davis, who was joined by analyst Clark Kellogg in picking the Zips. "I've got Akron and John Groce — they've been to the last three tourneys — to go to the Sweet 16."
Will that happen? Probably not. The Zips likely will still be looking for their first NCAA tournament win a year from now. But going with the chalk pick is no fun, so let's say Akron wins 75-70.
After all, what's a Big Dance without a Cinderella?
