Then there wasthe history Akron made by defeating Toledo 79-76in the Mid-American Conference tournament championship game. The Zips became the first men's team to three-peat in the MAC tourney (and just the second to win four titles in five years). Akron also tied Ball State, Kent State and Ohio for the most MAC tourney crowns with seven. And UA set a single-season program record with 29 wins.
But tucked beneath the surface of Akron's dramatic victory over Toledo on March 14 was an unsung hero: sophomore guard Sharron Young.
Without the spark Young created, the Zips wouldn't be on their way to the men's NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. You wouldn't know it from glancing at the box score, either, because Young finished with seven points on 2-of-5 shooting from the field (1 of 4 on 3-pointers), one rebound, one assist and two steals in 16 minutes off the bench.

Young's desire and toughness made a difference, though.

Listed as 6 feet and 160 pounds, Young rolled an ankle while pursuing a rebound with 6:30 left in the first half. He immediately exited the game, but he returned with 15:47 remaining in the second half and proceeded to nail a crucial 3-pointer with 13:42 left, slicing Akron's deficit to five points after it had trailed by 12 at halftime.
"I knew I wasn't going to stop [playing after the injury occurred]," Young said. "I wouldn't stop for my brothers, and I told them that."

With 12:31 left, Young looked as if he were Pro Football Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed playing against the Browns.

Young perfectly read Toledo guard Sonny Wilson's Hail Mary inbound pass. While Young went for the interception, Rockets guard Mynor Strong fouled Young by falling on him with 12:28 remaining. Akron's bench — and the crowd — went wild.
"He changed the game, like, brought energy to the game," Scott said. "I'm just very grateful for him, for sure. He really hyped me up."
On Akron's ensuing inbound play, Young drove for a layup to cut Toledo's lead to a point with 12:23 left.

On UA's next possession, Scott made a turnaround jump shot to give the Zips their first lead of the game with 11:49 remaining.
Akron Zips guard Sharron Young (3) battles for the ball against Toledo Rockets guard Kyler Vanderjagt (4) during the second half of the Mid-American Conference championship at Rocket Arena, March 14, 2026, in Cleveland, Ohio.
All of those moments unfolded amid a 15-0 run by second-seeded Akron (29-5, 17-1). The momentum had shifted, and it ultimately haunted No. 4 Toledo (19-15, 11-7).
Young's contributions in a high-stakes game ought to give the public a window into the bigger picture of Akron basketball under Groce's guidance. Even in an era of college sports largely defined by name, image and likeness money and the whackiness of the transfer portal, the Zips have established a culture. Akron is picky about which guys it recruits, and it prioritizes player development. Groce's recipe for success includes those ingredients.

Young is in his second season out of Morgantown High School in West Virginia, where he won three consecutive AAAA state championships. If Young were to stick with Akron — there are no promises nowadays — he could become UA's next Tavari Johnson, the standout point guard who was voted this year's MAC tourney MVP. Small yet scrappy like Young, Johnson has evolved into a prolific scorer. He and forward Amani Lyles led Akron with 15 points apiece against Toledo.
For now, Young is a valuable role player who became the hidden hero of the MAC tournament title game. And the Zips are thanking him as they dust off their dancing shoes again.
