Alex Bregman took to Instagram on Wednesday to bid farewell to the Red Sox and the city of Boston .
“It was an honor to play for a city that shares the same passion and love for the game as I do,” Bregman captioned the photo . “You welcomed my family with open arms and we will always be grateful for the support you gave us.
“To my teammates, coaches, AC, it was an absolute honor.”
Bregman signed a five-year, $175 million deal with the Chicago Cubs after spending the 2025 season with the Red Sox .
Boston remained engaged with the All-Star third baseman throughout the offseason. A source told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo the Red Sox were willing to offer him five guaranteed years with a similar annual salary. But the Cubs outbid them with their guaranteed $35 million per year.
Bregman’s deal also includes a no-trade clause and deferrals.
The 31-year-old was a good fit for the Red Sox. Not only did he provide offense, the leadership Bregman brought to the clubhouse — especially for rookies Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer — did not go unnoticed.
The Red Sox still would benefit from adding another bat to their lineup, but they shifted their focus to pitching on Wednesday when they signed Ranger Suárez to a five-year deal.
