Alex Cora posted his one-word (plus emoji) reaction to his Twitter/X account after being fired by the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
“Happy!” Cora posted with a smiling emoji early Sunday morning.
The Red Sox (10-17) also let go hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin and game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek.
The team called Varitek’s removal a reassignment within the organization rather than a firing.
Varitek took the news of his re-assignment particularly hard and at this point seems unlikely to continue with the organization, according to MassLive.com sources. The coaches left the team hotel around 9 p.m. ET to return to Boston.
Cora also posted a photo to his Instagram stories of the fired coaches getting on their plane from Baltimore .
Following Saturday’s win over the Orioles in Baltimore, Cora and his coaches returned to the team hotel, the Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore, where principal owner John Henry, team president/CEO Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow were waiting to inform Cora of the news.
“Incredibly difficult day,” Kennedy said. “We’ll discuss more (Sunday). Grateful to Alex for everything he has done for the organization and all the guys. We’re gonna move forward (Sunday).”
Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy will serve as interim manager.
“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude,” Henry said in a statement . “He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways.”
Red Sox leadership are expected to hold a press conference in Baltimore on Sunday morning prior to the team’s game at 1:35 p.m.
