FORT MYERS — Alex Cora wanted to get ahead of any questions about the Opening Day starter.
The Red Sox manager said Garrett Crochet will start for Boston when it begins its season March 26.
“Let’s get that (expletive) over with,” Cora said Tuesday.
Crochet learned of the news at his press conference when the media told him.
“To start for this team on Opening Day again is pretty cool feeling,” Crochet said.
Crochet, who was the Opening Day starter in 2025, was acquired by the Red Sox ahead of the 2025 season from the Chicago White Sox . He fit into the ace role seamlessly and helped the Red Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2021.
The left-hander went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 255 strikeouts in 205⅓ innings pitched last season.
Crochet was the runner-up in American League Cy Young voting in 2025.
The Red Sox open the 2026 season on the road against the Cincinnati Reds .
