- Analyst Blasts Steelers For Considering Veteran HC-QB Pairing: ‘Worst Decision Pittsburgh Could Make’
ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky explains the worst decision the Pittsburgh Steelers could make this offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are considering several options amidst their head coaching search , but former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes one could turn into a disaster, especially if he's paired with Aaron Rodgers .
"Hiring Mike McCarthy and bringing Aaron back would be the worst decision Pittsburgh could make," Orlovsky said on ESPN's Get Up . "And that is not an indictment on each of them or either of them, individually. Mike McCarthy's a really good coach. Obviously, Aaron, one of the all-time greats. What are we doing Pittsburgh? To hire Mike McCarthy and bring Aaron back is going to place you, quite literally, in the same position you're in right now in January of 2027."
This isn't to say the Steelers are going to end of choosing McCarthy as their replacement for Mike Tomlin . However, they are clearly considering him among the rest of the candidates after completing an in-person interview with him on Wednesday.
McCarthy has been a winner throughout his coaching career with a 174-112-2 record across 18 seasons as an NFL head coach. He also beat Tomlin and the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

Orlovsky thinks that's exactly why Pittsburgh should avoid signing McCarthy, though.
"They're gonna be good enough to win 9 or 10 games and they're not gonna be bad enough to finally get a quarterback," Orlovsky continued. "That would be a disastrous thing to do for your future."
It also remains to be seen if Rodgers would even consider coming back to play for the Steelers in 2026 without Tomlin, but he and McCarthy do have a history together as McCarthy was the Packers head coach for much of Rodgers' tenure in Green Bay (2006-18).
Rodgers must first decide if he even wants to continue playing football, but it's certainly a situation that could play out in Pittsburgh and a bad one, according to Orlovsky and many others.
