- Andre Johnson Talks C.J. Stroud, But This Is Bigger Than Body Language
When Andre Johnson talks about the Houston Texans , I'm going to listen.
We're talking about one of the greatest players to ever put on a Texans uniform, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and somebody who understands exactly what it feels like to carry expectations in Houston. So when Johnson appeared on the LGND TLK podcast and said one of the biggest things bothering him about C.J. Stroud is his body language, it immediately got everybody talking.

Johnson didn't dance around it, either.
"What I dislike about C.J. is his body language," Johnson said, adding that a quarterback's demeanor can trickle down to the rest of the team because players naturally look toward their quarterback when things aren't going well.
With all the talk about the Texans in the offseason on roster additions and Stroud's contract, I understand what Dre is saying.
The Quarterback Is Always Being Watched
Playing quarterback in the NFL isn't like playing any other position. When the offense is rolling, everybody is looking at you. When everything is falling apart, everybody is still looking at you.

That's part of the job. There have been moments over the past couple of seasons when Stroud's frustration has been pretty easy to see. A bad series happens, protection breaks down or a drive stalls, and sometimes you can almost read the frustration without Stroud saying a word.
That's what Johnson is talking about. It doesn't mean Stroud doesn't care. It doesn't mean he's a bad teammate. And it certainly doesn't erase everything he has already accomplished in Houston.
But perception matters when you're the quarterback. Your teammates need to look at you after something goes wrong and feel like, "We're good. Seven has us."
Interestingly enough, Johnson also pointed out the other side of Stroud during Houston's opener against Buffalo. After Stroud scrambled for a first down and showed some emotion, Johnson liked the energy he saw. That's the version of Stroud he wants to see more consistently.

I think plenty of Texans fans probably feel the same way.
Let's Not Put Buffalo Entirely on Stroud
Here's where I'm pumping the brakes a little. Houston didn't lose 36-31 to Buffalo simply because C.J. Stroud had questionable body language. Come on now. Stroud completed 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He helped Houston put itself in position to win the game. The problem was that his two fumbles came at the absolute worst times, on Houston's first offensive play and again on the final possession.
That's where Johnson's larger point becomes more interesting. Forget the facial expressions for a second. Finish the game. That's ultimately what matters.

Johnson also connected his criticism to Stroud's contract situation. Houston and Stroud entered the season without reaching a long-term extension, meaning every big moment this year is naturally going to become part of the conversation about his future.
When you've got the football late against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills with an opportunity to win, that's your moment.
Those are the drives franchise quarterbacks are remembered for.
Stroud Didn't Take the Bait
I also liked Stroud's response. He could've turned this into a week-long Houston sports-radio argument with bad sports takes, but he didnt.

Instead, Stroud said he respects Johnson, appreciates the criticism and is focused on going 1-0 against Cincinnati . He also said if a conversation between the two needs to happen, it'll happen.
That's really all he needed to say. Will Anderson Jr. also defended his quarterback, saying he's seen Stroud display enthusiasm, lead his teammates and help bring everyone back together when things go wrong.
That's important context because we're watching games from the outside. Anderson is standing on the sideline and inside the locker room with Stroud.
Both things can be true. Johnson can see something he believes Stroud needs to improve, while Stroud's current teammates can believe he's already providing the leadership they need.

My Two Pennies
I'm not mad at Andre Johnson for saying it. Dre has earned the right to talk about this franchise, and nothing about his comments sounded like he wanted C.J. Stroud to fail. If anything, I heard a former Texans great challenging the current face of the franchise to take another step.
But I also don't want this body-language conversation becoming bigger than the football. C.J. doesn't need to become somebody he's not. He doesn't have to scream at teammates, throw his helmet or start giving motivational speeches after every three-and-out.
Just lead. When things go bad, reset. When the Texans need a drive, deliver. When everybody in the stadium is wondering whether Houston can finish the game, make them believe No. 7 is about to find a way.

Because at the end of the day, nobody remembers the quarterback's facial expression after a championship drive.
They remember the drive.
What has some fans and sports analysts up in arms are the words from former Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson on C.J.'s body language on the field. "With him, and this is just me personally, what I dislike about C.J. is his body language. His body language is bad," said Johnson.
