Aston Villa's summer reshaped Unai Emery's squad, but the manager still needs leaders as arrivals settle. Villa sit ninth in the Premier League after eight matches, with three wins, two draws and three defeats, and their 2-1 victory over Manchester City offered a boost.
The club sold established players, including Ezri Konsa, who joined Arsenal for £51m. Villa brought in Taylor Harwood-Bellis for £25m, yet the young defender must adapt to Emery's high line and domestic and European demands. Pau Torres offers quality in possession, while Tyrone Mings provides experience as he returns to fitness. With several defensive options adjusting to different roles, Emery needs a reliable presence who can deliver consistent performances immediately.
Villa need a defender who knows Emery's methods. Lindelöf can organise the back line, pass cleanly under pressure and cover more than one role when injuries or tactical changes demand it.
According to Sport Witness , citing Swedish newspaper Sportbladet, Villa want to extend Victor Lindelöf's contract from 2027 to 2028. The 32-year-old Swedish international joined as a free agent in September 2025 after eight years at Manchester United , and he has played every minute for Villa this season. Reports say Lindelöf welcomes the offer and talks have progressed, although the club have yet to announce an agreement.
Lindelöf made 28 appearances in his first Villa season and started in defensive midfield during the 3-0 Europa League final win over Freiburg. That versatility remains valuable as Emery manages a changing back line. This campaign, the Swede has started all eight league games, completing 720 minutes, and recorded 22 clearances across three Champions League matches. His 96% passing accuracy from 150 accurate passes underlines the composure Emery values.

Yes. Villa's £310m in summer sales and £252m reinvestment brought major change, but replacing every experienced player with youth would leave Emery short of stability. Harwood-Bellis has long-term potential, and Lindelöf can help him learn Emery's demands in training while protecting Villa against another defensive departure.
A one-year extension would prevent Villa losing a trusted performer for nothing in 2027. With no reported wage figure available, the decision should rest on a sensible salary and Lindelöf's role, rather than sentiment. For a side balancing league demands with European nights, his experience has practical value.
