Aston Villa's 2-1 victory over Manchester City offered Unai Emery another reason to trust his squad's younger players, with Ian Maatsen producing an impressive display after returning from an ankle injury. The Dutch defender spent five weeks recovering after picking up the problem against Nottingham Forest , yet Emery immediately handed him a starting role against one of the Premier League's strongest attacking sides.
That decision carried some risk. Manchester City regularly test full-backs with quick combinations, overlapping runs and pressure high up the pitch, leaving little room for hesitation. Maatsen responded with five recoveries, four tackles won and two interceptions, while completing four line-breaking passes and his only attempted dribble. He also recorded two shots and lost possession through a dispossession just once.
Those numbers help explain why former striker Tony Cascarino spoke so highly of the 24-year-old on talkSPORT . As reported by Aston Villa News , Cascarino described Maatsen as a "wonderful footballer" and argued that he offers considerably more than Lucas Digne did in the same position.
"Maatsen on the left side is a wonderful footballer. He's better than Digne for me, by a long way. You know I look at Digne and I look at Maatsen, honestly Unai Emery, I hold my hands up to him. I think he's done a fabulous job at rebuilding Villa in literally weeks."
Cascarino's assessment is more significant given Villa's changes at left-back over the summer. Digne joined Paris Saint-Germain after the French club triggered his reported £8.5 million release clause, while Villa recruited Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid for a reported £21.4 million. The Italian's current injury has left Maatsen as Emery's only available natural left-back, increasing the importance of his performances during a busy campaign.
Across all competitions in 2026/27, Maatsen has played seven matches and accumulated 606 minutes. He has completed 187 passes, won eight tackles and made eight interceptions, offering Emery a combination of forward movement and defensive work.
His performances have strengthened the case for a longer-term commitment. Maatsen's contract runs until 2030, and reports suggest Villa have discussed an improved deal.

Villa have good reasons to consider an extension. Emery wants his full-backs to support attacks, carry the ball into advanced areas and recover quickly when opponents counter. Maatsen's pace and willingness to move forward suit those demands, while his display against City showed that he can contribute defensively against elite opposition.
However, Ruggeri's arrival means Villa must plan for competition rather than build their entire strategy around one player. Once fit, the Italian should provide another option, allowing Emery to rotate his full-backs across domestic and European fixtures.
Maatsen still needs to improve his consistency, particularly when opponents target the space behind him. Yet selling Digne and recruiting younger defenders suggests Villa want a more energetic profile in wide areas, rather than another short-term solution.
An improved contract could protect Villa's investment and discourage rival clubs from testing their resolve. More importantly, it would reward a defender who has responded to an important opportunity with a performance that strengthened his claim for regular selection.
