The Houston Astros can add another injury to the list. Zach Dezenzo , a 25-year-old outfielder, is dealing with a right elbow flare-up.
Dezenzo is representing Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. Although he was born in Canton, Ohio, he's eligible to play for Italy because of his family roots, specifically his great-grandfather on his dad's side.
Because of the flare-up, he reportedly won't be throwing for the next few days. Fortunately, the injury does not affect his hitting, so he is still able to serve as the designated hitter for the remaining Grapefruit League games, per CBS Sports .
Yordan Alvarez , however, is expected to remain the primary designated hitter once the regular season begins.
The smart approach is not to rush Dezenzo back into throwing, and that appears to be the plan. He isn't throwing for the next few days, and it is crucial that he is fully healthy before returning to game action to avoid aggravating the flare-up.
To have a real shot at making the Opening Day roster, Dezenzo will need to demonstrate full throwing ability and velocity before the end of spring training.
While representing Italy, Dezenzo has had some memorable moments during his first appearance on the big stage. Being part of a team that made Italy's first-ever semifinal appearance at the WBC is a significant milestone in international baseball and a strong experience for Dezenzo's résumé.
Hopefully, he will be back to throwing soon and remain in the running for an Opening Day roster spot.
