The Colorado Avalanche are looking to avoid a 2-0 hole against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Finals. In Game 1 , the Golden Knights took a 4-2 victory over the Avalanche .
It was once again a slow start for the Avalanche, failing to score in the first two periods of the game, and once again falling behind. Now, Avalanche blueliner Devon Toews is speaking out about those slow starts , per Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com.
"We haven't done a great job of getting out to leads early," Toews said. "So, we're learning to play from behind, and we've got to start to try to take the lead a little bit more in these games, and put our foot down and put pressure on teams to try to attack us instead of us having to attack them."
The Avalanche have failed to score in the first period of four straight games, as the other team has scored first in all four games. While the Golden Knights did not score in the first, they tallied two goals in the second period and the first goal of the third, putting Colorado down 3-0. Still, there is a belief that the team will rebound in Game 2, as Nazem Kadri pointed out.
"Well, I know there's going to be a response," Kadri said. "There's no question about it. I think even in the last series, when we lost Game 3, we responded in Game 4 (with a 5-2 win). I think some people thought the sky was falling then, and we certainly believe we have a process that we stick to, and we're not going to waver from that."
The process has worked well so far for the Avs this year. The team last lost in back-to-back games on March 16 and 18, falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins and then the Dallas Stars in a shootout. The Avs are hopeful they will have Cale Makar back for Game 2, which is set for Friday night with puck drop at 8 pm ET.
