Avalanche traded one 5-9 defenseman born May 12, 1998 — and got back another 5-9 defenseman born May 12, 1998 originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Colorado Avalanche have pulled off one of the most unlikely sequences of transactions in NHL history.
Last week, they traded away one defenseman who is 5-foot-9 and was born on May 12, 1998. Then on Wednesday, they traded to acquire a defenseman who is 5-foot-9 and was born on May 12, 1998.
No, they're not the same guy.
First, they traded away Samuel Girard .
Then, they got Nick Blankenburg from the Nashville Predators .
And yes, those defensemen are the same height and were born on the exact same day.
What are the odds? You'd have to figure pretty darn minuscule.
This fact started going viral on social media with this post, and the heights and birth dates are both accurate:

Fans in the replies are pointing out that Blankenburg makes a lot less money than Girard, so they're happy about that.
There really needs to be a discussion about party planning, though. Girard and Blankenburg will celebrate their 28th birthdays in May, and given that they just essentially traded places, seems like a good excuse for a shared party.
The only thing crazier would've been if they were involved in the exact same trade. Maybe next time.
