Barrios and Lookman fire Atlético Madrid past 10-man United
Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October, earning their first points in the competition this season. Pablo Barrios struck inside the first minute at the Metropolitano, and Ademola Lookman sealed the win late on after United had Leny Yoro sent off.
The match was the second matchday of the league phase. Atlético's result also carried a wider European significance, though the match coverage available does not set out the historical record needed to verify the claim that it was the club's first league-phase victory over English opposition.

Barrios gives Atlético an early lead
Barrios scored after 47 seconds, finishing a move that began with a pass from Alex Baena on the left. Atlético continued to create danger: Grimaldo hit the crossbar with a free-kick before half-time, while Julián Álvarez struck the post with a volley after the break.
Johnny Cardoso briefly appeared to have doubled the lead, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review found a handball by Marcos Llorente at the start of the move. Atlético's control was reflected in the match figures reported by AS: the hosts had 57.8 per cent possession and attempted 10 shots, compared with United's 42.2 per cent and seven efforts.
United remained in the contest, with Bruno Fernandes later hitting the crossbar. But Yoro's dismissal in the 74th minute, after Jonathan David was judged to have been denied a clear scoring opportunity, shifted the closing stages further in Atlético's favour. David then forced a save from Senne Lammens, and Lookman converted the rebound in the 79th minute.

Victory came on a difficult day for Koke
Atlético dedicated the win to captain Koke after his mother died on the morning of the match. The team observed a minute's silence before kick-off, and Diego Simeone was visibly moved during the tribute and again after Barrios scored.
Players spoke after the game about Koke's importance to the squad and their intention to support him and his family. The result gave the captain's team a significant European night, but the occasion was marked as much by that personal loss as by the three points.
Atlético turn to the third matchday
Jan Oblak preserved the clean sheet in stoppage time, saving from Matheus Cunha after United had threatened again late on. The win lifted Atlético to three points in the league phase, while AS reported that Simeone's side were due to play their third Champions League matchday the following week.
