- Bearkats look lost in CUSA opener against Liberty
LYNCHBURG, VA — Through the first four games of the season, Sam Houston looked primed to get back to winning.
In its Conference USA opener against Liberty, the Bearkats looked like the team of 2025. After Sam Houston won the toss and elected to defer, the Flames went 100 yards for a score. The Jaylon Coleman return was called back for a hold, but it didn't matter.
Liberty marched down the field with an eight-play, 75-yard drive to get into the end zone. While the Flames never pulled away until late, they were still the better team on the field. Sam Houston's first two drives saw six plays for 18 yards and were down two scores.
It didn't stop there. The Liberty rushing attack was in full force, and by the end, it allowed 290 yards on the ground. The Flames' rushing attack was the most against Sam Houston through the first five games, and it was also a season high for Liberty.
The Flames found the end zone four times on the ground, with three different rushers, and once through the air in the 35-3 beatdown.
