The Detroit Tigers need to improve their outfield this offseason, but that evaluation should include a closer look at Ben Malgeri. His first major league season provided enough encouragement to keep him in the conversation, even if his exact role in 2027 remains unsettled.
Malgeri hit .250/.350/.417 with five home runs and five stolen bases in his first season with Detroit. Those results came in 120 at-bats, making them a useful introduction rather than proof that the Tigers have found an everyday starter.

His opportunity followed several years of work in the organization. An 18th-round selection in the 2021 draft, Malgeri advanced through the Tigers' minor league affiliates before receiving his first major league promotion June 23, 2026.
The offensive improvement began before his arrival in Detroit. At Double-A Erie, his strikeout rate dropped from 31.5% in 2024 to 18.2% in 2025, giving him a much better chance to contribute when he stepped into the batter's box.
He followed that with a strong season at Triple-A Toledo, batting .296/.401/.496 with nine home runs in 65 games. That performance gave the Tigers a reason to find out whether his production would carry against major league pitching.
The important part is that Malgeri gave Detroit something to evaluate beyond a brief stretch of success in the majors. His minor league progression provides context for the opportunity, although it does not eliminate the need to prove himself over a longer period.

There are still reasons to remain measured. Statcast's .317 expected weighted on-base average was below his actual .341 mark, suggesting that his underlying performance was less impressive than the results alone. That does not erase his production, but it reinforces the need for a larger sample.
For Detroit, the sensible approach would be to give Malgeri a chance to compete for a reserve outfield role and earn additional starts. A player who can provide useful at-bats and dependable defensive coverage can help, even if he does not become a fixture in the lineup.
That opportunity should exist alongside the Tigers' search for established help. Riley Greene remains central to the offense, Max Clark is part of the outfield's future, and Detroit still needs to determine how the remaining pieces fit around them.
Malgeri's presence should create competition rather than give the organization a reason to avoid an addition. The Tigers can improve the group externally while allowing an internal option to demonstrate that he belongs.

The next step is showing that he can sustain his approach as opponents adjust and his playing time changes. Malgeri has earned consideration through his progress, but a dependable role in 2027 will require him to build on that work.
