- Ben Malgeri’s next step: Turning minor league progress into a lasting Tigers role

Ben Malgeri in limited work, has looked solid.
Ben Malgeri has reached the point where the conversation needs to move beyond being a nice story. So far tonight, Malgeri has three hits, all hard contact, as he is pretty much like others on this team, are looking for the Tigers have to figure out how much of what got him to Detroit can help them going forward.

For those of us who have followed him through the minors, that is a worthwhile change. His speed and ability to move around the outfield have been part of the discussion for years and has continued to evolve in the minors, grinding away from a 18th round pick in 2021.
Back in TMLR's 2023 outfield review, Malgeri was already showing the pieces of a useful player. He handled considerable time in center field for Erie, produced a 101 wRC+, collected 34 extra-base hits and stole 15 bases. The walk rate was in double digits, but more consistent contact remained an area to improve. This was a player with several ways to contribute, still trying to make the offensive package fit together.
In May, we were making the case that he belonged in the call-up conversation. Our TMLR breakdown emphasized his athleticism, defensive flexibility and offensive progress, while acknowledging the swing-and-miss concerns. The question was whether he would hit enough for those other skills to matter in Detroit. His Triple-A production gave the Tigers reason to find out: a .296 average, .401 on-base percentage and .897 OPS, with nine home runs and eight steals. Detroit selected his contract back on June 23rd .
Heading into tonight, he had 20 hits, three home runs, 13 walks and 26 strikeouts. His batting line stood at .238/.343/.369. That is a small sample, especially for a player receiving irregular opportunities, but there is enough here to identify what has translated and where the next adjustment needs to happen.

The first encouraging number is his 45.8% hard-hit rate, above the 37.1% MLB comparison in the supplied Statcast snapshot. Malgeri hit 27 of his 59 batted balls at least 95 mph, with an average exit velocity of 90.8 mph. He has been capable of making firm contact against major league pitching, and his 30.5% line-drive rate fits the picture of someone who can produce useful contact without relying entirely on home runs.
That distinction matters because hard contact and home run power are different things. Malgeri had three barrels, a 5.1% barrel rate against the snapshot's 7.6% league average. His .348 expected slugging percentage was below his actual .369 mark, while his .316 expected weighted on-base average was close to his .322 actual wOBA. Those numbers do not make a strong case that a major offensive breakout has been hidden by poor luck. They suggest the results have been broadly reasonable for the contact and plate appearances he has produced.
His bat tracking numbers add another layer. Malgeri's average bat speed was 68.8 mph, compared with 71.7 mph for the league, and his swing measured 6.4 feet against a 7.3-foot average. Despite that lower speed, his squared-up rate per swing was 25.5%, slightly above the league's 25.1%. That metric measures how efficiently a hitter converts the available pitch and bat speed into exit velocity. The way I processed that data is that Malgeri has shown he can make efficient contact with a relatively short swing, even without above-average bat speed.
There is still room to improve how that contact becomes damage. Only 32.5% of his tracked competitive swings fell within Statcast's ideal attack-angle range, compared with 50.9% for the league. That is separate from his batted-ball launch angle and does not mean every swing outside the range is a bad one. It does give us another reason to watch how consistently he gets the barrel into a position to drive the ball. Without matching minor league swing footage and tracking data, these numbers describe his current swing; they do not establish a specific mechanical change.

The clearest difference is in how Malgeri has handled pitch types. Against the fastball group, which includes four-seamers, sinkers and cutters, he had a .271 average with a .315 expected average and a 15% whiff rate. His expected slugging against that group was .425. Those are encouraging early results, although they should not be confused with proof that he has solved elite velocity. This grouping includes several fastball types and a range of speeds.
Offspeed pitches have been a much bigger problem. Malgeri missed on 57.1% of his swings against that group, with a .167 average and .127 expected average in 13 plate appearances ending on those pitches. The swing-timing table also showed just an 11% perfect-contact rate against offspeed, compared with 27% against fastballs. Thirteen plate appearances cannot establish a permanent weakness, but that much swing-and-miss gives opposing pitchers something to test. For Malgeri, recognizing the speed change and staying in position to make contact are clear areas to watch. Sometimes, like Hao-Yu Lee, you can see him overswinging a bit.
His overall approach provides some balance. The 13.1% walk rate is a positive, and his 28.1% chase rate was close to the snapshot's 28.6% league average. Inside the strike zone, his 85.6% contact rate was above the 82.7% comparison. Once he chased, though, his contact rate dropped to 45.8%, well below the league's 57.9%. He has not been expanding the zone at an unusually high rate, but those swings have been costly. That helps explain how a hitter can show patience and still strike out in 26.3% of his plate appearances.
For the Tigers, my projection is a fourth-outfielder opportunity with a chance to earn selected starts. His sprint speed ranked in the 91st percentile and his arm strength in the 73rd percentile in the supplied snapshot. Those tools support opportunities to run and contribute defensively, although neither percentile establishes his actual defensive value. FanGraphs' preseason evaluation was more conservative about his center-field fit than our TMLR's earlier coverage, projecting him best in a corner and identifying a potential role starting against left-handed pitching. His ability to handle center when needed is something Detroit should continue evaluating, alongside whether the bat supports a matchup role.

Malgeri has already given the Tigers a reason to keep looking. The walks, firm contact and athleticism offer several ways to contribute, while the offspeed misses and limited barrel production explain why an everyday projection would be premature. He has come a long way from being an Erie outfielder working toward more consistent contact. The next step is to make those improvements dependable enough that Detroit can count on him for a specific job. Earning that role would be a meaningful outcome for both Malgeri and the organization that developed him.
