The San Diego Padres are finding ways to win games despite their lackluster offensive performance. However, the Padres know they need to be better in order to make any noise in the postseason. While underperforming stars such as Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. could certainly bounce back, San Diego will also likely consider boosting the offense with a trade or two before the deadline. However, would the Padres consider trading for Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman ? MLB analyst Ben Verlander thinks it will happen .
"I think the Padres trade for Adley Rutschman at the deadline. Hot take. Just putting it out there so that when it happens I have proof," Verlander wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Orioles could still end up competing this season, but they have endured an up and down campaign. However, Verlander does not believe Baltimore will only trade Rutschman if the team sells at the deadline. Instead, he believes the O's could move on from Rutschman and make Samuel Basallo the everyday catcher.
"To be fair my thought behind Adley being traded isn't me saying the Orioles are going to be sellers," Verlander wrote in response to a fan. "The AL is weak. They can certainly get into the playoffs. But with both Adley and Basallo. The latter already extended. Adley with 1.5 yrs of control left. Could sort of retool/add strength where it's needed without throwing in the towel."
Will the Orioles and Padres end up making this trade? Anything can happen. It will be interesting to see if Verlander's prediction ends up coming true.
