Before the 2026-27 campaign even started, many had already ruled out the Detroit Pistons in favor of other squads that made more high profile moves during the offseason.
Of course, the New York Knicks are currently NBA Champions, so there is no shortage of talent in the Eastern Conference to begin with, but the Pistons attracted far less summertime attention than their contemporaries despite bolstering their perimeter attack. That reality has allowed for Detroit to enter the regular season with a familiar chip on their shoulder after securing the top seed last year, which is usually a difficult task to combine with a sustained underdog mentality.

But in the Motor City, the Pistons have doubled down on their identity as a defensively-stout squad. So far, Detroit has held four of their seven opponents under 100 points this season on the way to an impressive 6-1 start, which is no small feat considering the squad lost rim-protecting force Isaiah Stewart during the offseason. Overall, the Pistons hold the top defensive rating in the association through two weeks, which is a testament to the culture that J.B. Bickerstaff established in Motown.
From a team-wide perspective, the Pistons currently rank top 10 in the NBA for steals while also securing a top five position in the blocks department, but turnover generation has never been a problem for Detroit during Bickerstaff's tenure. Ausar Thompson has continued to provide elite on-ball defensive pressure on the perimeter , though he's had the benefit of a more-than-stout defensive showing from Cade Cunningham to make his job even easier.
Most recently, the Pistons took down the Charlotte Hornets for the second time in one week with a 124-91 win on Monday night , and that victory was borne out of an on-brand defensive effort from Detroit. When the final buzzer sounded, the Pistons had already forced Charlotte into committing 27 turnovers on the night, so Detroit's tenacious reputation won out once again.
"When we're defending at the level that we're capable of defending and shots are going, we're going to be a tough out," Bickerstaff said after the game. "Our guys, again, have completely bought into what's most important to team, and for us it's our identity of being defensive-minded, being aggressive, being disruptive. We've got guys that can play in the open court, which creates a lot of opportunities for us also, but when you add that on top of the shots falling, we're going to be pretty hard to beat."

As Bickerstaff alluded to, the Pistons have made a commitment to getting back quickly on defense, which allows for Detroit to set up right away and shut down transition looks in the process. On that front, the Pistons rank No. 7 in the association in stopping opponent fastbreak scoring at just 12 points per game, thereby showing effectiveness in halting the break.
It is no secret that aggressive defense is a non-negotiable quality that's required on the road to playing time on the Pistons. If that was not clear enough before, Detroit has done everything they can to crystallize that message through seven games.
