Wisconsin football is deep into fall camp , so naturally reactions, predictions and hot takes are rolling out rapidly.
I've got a few of my own , of course, but while there's plenty to be gleaned from what's been an eventful fall camp for the Badgers , some expectations need to be tempered.
In particular, I still have my reservations about this Wisconsin passing game.
Now, I can assure you that it's going to be better than it was last season. That's an extremely low bar, of course - the Badgers finished with the 130th ranked passing offense in the FBS ahead of only NIU and three triple-options schools. Their leading passer was Hunter Simmons with 664 yards.
While Colton Joseph dramatically raises both the floor and ceiling of Wisconsin's aerial attack, we need to remember a few key factors: Joseph is still growing as a passer , and the Badgers aren't exactly flush with offensive skill position talent.
That is to say; the Badgers' passing game will certainly be better, but I don't anticipate it being particularly explosive. It may go quiet at times. It'll heat up at times too, but it's still a work in progress.
Thus, due to my reservations with the Badgers' passing game, I have a hard time believing that Wisconsin's offense is capable of producing a 1,000 yard receiver.
Wisconsin wide receiver Eugene Hilton. | Christian Borman.
The Badgers haven't produced a 1,000-yard wide receiver since 2013, when Jared Abbrederis reeled in 1,081 yards and seven scores off 78 catches. It's not going to happen in 2026.
The fall camp emergence of Eugene Hilton Jr has some salivating over what he can become for this offense. I'm among those that believe his breakout is legit . His talent passes the eye test, and he can do a little bit of everything which will keep him involved. But again, this is not a unit that's going to be capable of producing a 1,000-yard pass-catcher.
Hilton looks very solid, but it's not like he's cemented himself as the standalone, true No. 1 wideout. No one has done that yet, and that's the point. Though a handful of receivers have flashed during fall camp, this is still going to be a wide receiver by committee situation.
Fall camp has proven that there's plenty of talent amongst the Badgers' wideouts, and that's definitely reassuring. But still, no one has yet to truly emerge as the alpha, and that's what it would take to produce a 1,00-yard receiver in this run-heavy offense with a passing game that's still growing.
