- The Biggest What-If in Utah Jazz History: Dante Exum
(Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports)
Every rebuild produces trade regrets and draft-day what-ifs. The Utah Jazz have had plenty. But none carries the specific, gutting shape of Dante Exum 's — a player who showed flashes at the wrong times, making the injuries that followed feel less like bad luck than a stolen career.
Exum bypassed college entirely, arriving in Australia as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 draft at 6-foot-6 with a wingspan that made scouts talk about him as a point guard in a small forward's frame.

As a 19-year-old rookie, he played all 82 games, and by season's end he'd taken the starting job from Trey Burke .
He finished the year averaging 4.8 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds, which seemed incredibly modest — but the trajectory mattered more.
In August 2015, while playing an exhibition game for the Australian national team in Slovenia, Exum tore his ACL on a non-contact play. He missed the entire 2015-16 season. He returned in 2016-17 and showed real flashes.
His defense on James Harden in the 2018 playoffs, holding the eventual MVP to 0-for-7 shooting across 22 defensive possessions, is still the signature moment of his Jazz career.

But the injuries kept piling up. He dislocated his shoulder in the preseason before his fourth year, needed surgery and played just 14 games. In his fifth year, he tore the patellar tendon in his right knee, ending that season early and delaying the start of the next.
Utah, still believing in his tools, signed Exum to a three-year, $33 million extension. He was traded 18 months later.
By the time Utah sent him to Cleveland in December 2019, he had appeared in just 215 of a possible 439 games across his Jazz tenure.
His career averages in a Jazz uniform: 5.7 points, 2.2 assists, 1.7 rebounds on 40% shooting from the field and 30% from three.

For a No. 5 overall pick given more than five years to develop, that's not a bust in the conventional sense. It's a player who was never healthy long enough to be judged on consistent performance.
The what-if here is purely about his health: an ACL tear in a throwaway exhibition game, a shoulder that gave out in practice, a patellar tendon that couldn't hold up. Take any one away, and the version of Exum the Jazz drafted gets several more uninterrupted years to develop into exactly the kind of two-way guard rosters are constructed now.
Exum's career didn't end in 2019. He played for Cleveland, then in Europe, before catching on with the Dallas Mavericks , where he found a good role during their 2024 Finals run.
That's the real weight of the what-if: not that Exum's career was a failure, but that whatever he became, Utah never got to see it.
