The Bills survived five turnovers and still knocked off the Los Angeles Chargers , 24-16, at the new Highmark Stadium on Sunday.
It is Buffalo's fourth 3-0 start in the seven seasons since 2020, and head coach Joe Brady's first at the helm.
But it didn't come easy, specially considering how things went in the first half when the Bills were down early at home, thanks in part to several offensive turnovers.
But QB Josh Allen and the offense were resilient and fought their way back, and some of the help came from their rotation depth in the running backs group and a role player on the team who hadn't yet played this season.
Running back Ty Johnson , who had missed the club's first two contests of the year after he suffered a lower-leg/hamstring issue during the Bills ' "Return of the Red and Blue" practice session on August 8th.
His biggest play came in the fourth quarter, when he slipped behind two Chargers rushers for a 43-yard catch and run on fourth down that kept the go-ahead drive alive with Buffalo trailing 13-10.
Allen has called Johnson the game's premier third-down back, and his season debut backed that up and more, adding 50 yards on four catches in the win.
He credited the backup running back for his contribution not merely to their ground game, but also to being a spark that kept the offense going en route to a comeback win.The QB went further after the game.
"Ty Johnson being the vet that he is," the QB said during his postgame presser. "I've said this for a long time, you know, he's got to be the best third down back in the league."
Johnson also put up two straight catches on Buffalo's fifth drive went for 16 yards on the second one, enough to set up a Tyler Bass field goal after the drive stalled. But it was the big fourth quarter heads up play that drew a lot of attention.
"Just being smart enough to just come open for me and found a found a way to catch a football there on fourth down and, you know, let us convert," Allen added.
The Chargers had a big bodied defensive front and an inside man on their sideline by way of former Miami Dolphins head coach and vape enthusiast turned Chargers offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel.
That made for a challenging defensive attack that the Buffalo offense faced, and the Bills stars losing the football on those earlier drives to turnovers didn't help either.
Even still, Johnson and players like running back James Cook , who rebounded from an early fumble to finish with for 154 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, made an important impact.
They'll have a chance to do just that again on the same home field on Sunday in Orchard Park when the team hosts the New England Patriots .
