Carolina has a franchise-defining quarterback call coming, and Buffalo has a long-standing hole in the secondary. What would a Jaycee Horn deal actually cost?
The Carolina Panthers have a decision to make about where this team actually stands. With the NFL trade deadline about two weeks away, I think one of the smartest things Carolina could do is listen to offers for Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn .
The Buffalo Bills are the team I would call first.
During the Oct. 26 trade simulation episode of 13 Personnel with Austin Stanley and Easton Freeze , I went straight to the blockbuster. This deal is hypothetical, and a simulator signing off on it doesn't mean either front office would. Still, it is a conversation worth having for both sides.
Here is the package I put together:
– Buffalo receives: CB Jaycee Horn and a 2028 fourth-round pick – Carolina receives: A 2027 first-round pick
The simulator wanted the Panthers to add a little more to the deal, which is why the fourth-rounder was included.
Let's be honest about Carolina. The Panthers are not contenders, and anybody who watched them against Tampa Bay knows that. If you ask me, this roster isn't very good, and the team is a little older than you might think in terms of average age. I'm not sure Carolina is in a winning window right now. A reset of assets makes a lot of sense.
That brings us to the quarterback position. Bryce Young has been pretty good for the most part, and he has shown real improvement. The problem is that the Panthers have a massive decision on the horizon. Is Young a player you want to extend for the long term? Is he good enough to be part of that conversation?
I don't know if Carolina will hand Young big money. That decision has to be made relatively soon, though, and paying him could potentially handicap the rest of the roster. That is a big reason why I don't love where this team is from a team-building perspective.
Adding a second first-round pick would give the Panthers more flexibility. Carolina has needs at tight end and interior offensive line. The secondary is already a need even with Horn on the roster, which is why I'm not terribly worried about Carolina losing him.
The Bills need cornerback help. I believe Horn is one of the best press-man corners in the NFL, and he would be a fun addition to a Jim Leonhard defense.
Freeze made a great point during the show about Buffalo's history in the secondary. He argued that few teams in professional sports have struggled to build a defensive backfield the way the Bills have, and that it is time to stop swinging and missing on projects. Going after a player Buffalo knows is good is a different approach.
There is a catch, and it is a big one. Horn is currently on injured reserve with a quad injury, and his return timeline is not clear. He has also dealt with injury issues at times over the last few years. He's a very good player when he's healthy, but he does get banged up a decent amount.
That makes this a long-term play for the Bills, who would essentially be trading for what Horn could give them in December and January. A first-round pick is a steep price to pay for that. I understand why Buffalo fans would hesitate.
There is a price-of-business conversation to be had here. The Bills would be paying a premium for a proven corner with health questions. The Panthers would be giving up one of their best players to gain assets ahead of a franchise-altering quarterback decision.
I think Carolina might be willing to have that conversation. Whether Buffalo is willing to pay the price with Horn on IR is another question entirely. With the deadline approaching, we will see if either team is ready to make a move this bold.
