The Buffalo Bills may be lacking depth on the interior part of their defensive line, at least for the first few weeks of the 2026 campaign . Phidarian Mathis is being suspended three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy , per The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov. The penalty does not go into effect until Aug. 30, so the 28-year-old defensive tackle is eligible to compete during preseason play.
Mathis spent the first three years of his NFL career with the Washington Commanders and recorded 13 combined tackles in six games for the Bills last season. This latest setback could certainly prove detrimental, especially since he is not guaranteed a roster spot. All he can do now is try to minimize the damage that this self-inflicted wound has caused.
Buffalo is always under overwhelming pressure to succeed — call it the Josh Allen effect — but the stakes seem even higher this year with Joe Brady taking over as head coach. The Bills must figure out how to wrestle back control of the AFC East from the New England Patriots and make the winning plays when it matters most. They cannot afford distractions. It remains to be seen if the Mathis suspension qualifies as one.

The No. 47 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft has not lived up to his Alabama pedigree thus far, and his chances of becoming a viable NFL defensive lineman may have just taken another blow. He must continue to prepare for the new campaign and seize the opportunities that lie in front of him. Buffalo faces the Carolina Panthers in its preseason opener this Saturday afternoon.
