Patrick Kane received the celebration . Bowen Byram received the enormous contract and the expectations that accompany it. Another new Blackhawk arrived with far less noise, even though he could fill a hole Chicago has ignored for years.
When the Blackhawks sent the No. 4 and No. 45 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, along with Louis Crevier , to Buffalo, Byram was understandably viewed as the return.
Jordan Greenway was the other guy.
That label may not last long. The 6-foot-6, 231-pound forward gives Chicago something its collection of smaller, skilled players cannot: an enormous nuisance who is perfectly happy to spend his evening leaning on defensemen.
Greenway will not compete with Connor Bedard or Kane for the team scoring lead. He had only one goal and six points in 40 games last season . Anyone expecting a sudden 25-goal campaign should probably take a long walk and reconsider.
His job will be considerably less glamorous.
Greenway can retrieve pucks, protect them below the goal line and create space for linemates who do not possess his size. He also brings 56 hits from an injury-shortened season and should receive regular work on the penalty kill.
Those contributions will not sell many jerseys. They could make Chicago far less pleasant to play against.
For much of the rebuild , the Blackhawks have been easy to push around. Opponents could crowd their young stars, win battles along the boards and occupy the front of Chicago's net without paying much of a price.
Greenway cannot fix all of that by himself. At 6-foot-6, though, he is rather difficult to overlook once he arrives in the corner.
Byram played with Greenway in Buffalo and described him as a physical forward who will hit, fight and protect the puck down low. That endorsement explains why Greenway could become more than an expensive fourth-line player.
The Blackhawks have enough forwards who want the puck on their sticks. Greenway can help them get it back.
He also gives the coaching staff a useful option late in games. Chicago can deploy him on defensive-zone draws, use his reach on the penalty kill or send him over the boards to protect a lead. Those assignments were too often handed to young players still learning how to survive NHL pressure.
There is a reason Buffalo included Greenway in the trade.
A lingering sports hernia limited him to 74 games over the past two seasons. He underwent multiple procedures and played through what he later described as terrible pain. His $4 million cap hit also looks steep for a player coming off six points.
The encouraging part came late last season. Greenway returned to play Buffalo's final 16 games, including every postseason contest, and said he was skating without pain.
Chicago does not need him to become a scorer. It needs him available.
Byram will receive more ice time. Kane will receive louder introductions. Yet if Greenway stays healthy and gives the Blackhawks the muscle, penalty killing and puck retrieval they have lacked, the quietest addition may leave one of the largest marks.
