- A Bleeding Secondary: Can the Detroit Lions’ Defense Salvage Their Season?
(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)
Through the first month of the 2026 NFL season, the Detroit Lions find themselves staring down a startling reality. A squad built to contend for a Super Bowl is being dragged down by a defense that hasn't just faltered, it has been historically appalling.
Through four games, Kelvin Sheppard's unit ranks 32nd in total defense, surrendering an eye-popping average of 423.8 yards per game. To make matters worse, Detroit has surrendered 17 total touchdowns, a mark that also sits dead last in the NFL. Despite an explosive offense keeping them afloat with a 2–2 record (good for second in the NFC North), the sheer volume of explosive plays allowed by the defense is threatening to derail what was supposed to be a championship campaign.

Historical Struggles and a Scheme Under Siege
To grasp how dire the situation in Detroit has become, one only needs to look at the week-to-week destruction on the field. Opposing quarterbacks have consistently picked apart Detroit's secondary, effortlessly converting third downs and racking up massive chunk plays through the air.
The transition into Kelvin Sheppard's second year as defensive coordinator was meant to bring continuity and aggressive growth. Instead, the defense has looked lost, plagued by blown coverages, missed tackles, and miscommunication across the back end.
Head coach Dan Campbell has publicly stood behind his coordinator, stressing that the blame falls on execution and coaching across the board. But patience in Motown is razor-thin. When a unit is allowing over 420 yards a night, scheme tweaks can only do so much, the real issue stems from who has been missing on the field.

The Root Cause: A Devastated Secondary
While scheme and execution have certainly drawn criticism, Detroit's defensive collapse cannot be discussed without highlighting the brutal injury bug that decimated their secondary before the season even gained traction.
The Lions have been forced to navigate the opening quarter of the schedule without their elite starting safety duo: Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph .
*Brian Branch, who suffered a torn Achilles late last season in Week fourteen, was placed on the reserve/PUP list to start the year. His absence has stripped the defense of its nickel equalizer, an instinctive playmaker capable of setting the edge against the run, blitzing off the slot, and erasing quick passes in the flat.

*Kerby Joseph, the team's ball-hawking safety, has also been sidelined on PUP due to a knee injury. Without Joseph patrolling the deep third, Detroit has lacked the takeaway threat that previously bailed out aggressive blitz packages.
In their absence, the front office has been forced to patch together a secondary with rotational backups and practice squad elevations like Chuck Clark, Christian Izien, and veteran stopgap Jalen Mills. Further injuries to depth pieces like Avonte Maddox have only compound the crisis, leaving Sheppard with limited options and no safety net over the top.
Where Do the Lions Go From Here?
The foundation may be cracking, but help is finally on the horizon.

Dan Campbell recently offered a massive ray of hope regarding Brian Branch, noting that the star defensive back is "close" to making his return to practice and action. Because Branch and Joseph began the season on the PUP list, they were required to miss the first four games. With Week four now in the rear-view mirror, both players become eligible to return.
Getting Branch and Joseph back isn't just about adding two starter-caliber athletes; it alters the entire identity of the Detroit defense:
1.) Restoring Communication: Branch and Joseph bring seamless familiarity with Sheppard's defense, eliminating the costly pre-snap busts that have gifted opponents easy touchdowns.
2.) Unlocking Aggression: With trustworthy coverage over the top, Detroit's front seven can play with more freedom, allowing the pass rush to get home without fear of quick penalties or immediate big plays over the top.

3.) Re-establishing Versatility: Branch's ability to cover the slot allows the Lions to match up far better against complex multi-receiver sets, taking pressure off the outside cornerbacks.
The Lions have managed to weather the initial storm at 2–2. However, if they hope to win the NFC North and make a deep playoff run, the defensive turnaround must begin immediately. With their star safeties closing in on a return, the Lions have a clear path to fix their historically awful start, if they can get healthy and execute when it matters most.
