Then Toronto Blue Jays have not lived up to expectations this season after coming within one game of a World Series title last season, and now their problems are compounding. On Sunday, starting pitcher Dylan Cease was pulled from his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a hamstring injury, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.
Cease pitched just 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and two runs to Pittsburgh before exiting with the Jays trailing 2-1. Mason Fluharty took his place in his absence. The Blue Jays are calling his injury mild left hamstring discomfort, per Matheson
Shortly after Cease left the game, star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also left the game with an elbow injury after being hit by a pitch.
Guerrero was removed due to what is being called a right elbow contusion, but he did undergo X-Rays which came back negative, per Matheson.
The hope is that Cease won't miss a ton of time with this injury, as the Blue Jays gave him a seven-year, $210 million contract this offseason. Coming into this game, he had a stellar 2.98 ERA in 10 starts and is leading the American League in strikeouts (84) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.2).
Guerrero has played in all 53 games for Toronto this season and is hitting .287, but he has just three home runs and 22 RBI on the season. While he has still been as effective as ever at getting on base, his power deficit is a concern. Now, he could be out of the lineup for a little bit.
The Blue Jays came into the day sitting at 25-27, 10.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays pacing the AL East. Toronto is going to have to make a run at some point to get back into the playoff picture, but now the concern is surrounding both Guerrero and Cease and their injuries.
As it stands on Sunday, Toronto is trailing the Pirates 4-1 in the seventh inning.
