- After bolting Minnesota, Koi Perich is already feeling the heat at Oregon
Koi Perich's offseason decision to transfer from his home-state Gophers program to Oregon left a bitter taste in the mouths of Minnesota fans. His first three games with the Ducks have now left Oregon fans wanting more from their big-money transfer-portal addition.
Perich was one of the best high school football prospects to come out of Minnesota in the modern era. He was considered a four-star recruit and the No. 70-ranked player in the country, according to the final 247Sports Composite in the Class of 2024. His decision to stay home and play for the Gophers was a huge recruiting win for P.J. Fleck and his staff.

Perich lived up to the hype as a true freshman in 2024. He was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten player, finishing with 46 total tackles and five interceptions. The hype peaked ahead of his sophomore season.
A failed two-way experiment and underwhelming special teams performance contributed to Perich taking a huge step back in 2025. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) defensive grade cratered from 88.9 in year one to 61.0 in year two. His 23 missed tackles stuck out like a sore thumb.
Despite a very underwhelming 2025, Perich entered the transfer portal, and he was considered an elite portal prospect. He chose to remain in the Big Ten and play for Oregon over notable offers from Miami (FL) and Texas Tech, among other elite programs.
"I just wanted to be on a contender and a great program. I think Oregon is both of those. There's a lot of great coaches, great players here. And with both of those in the equation, you're going to have a lot of success. Hopefully I can add to that," Perich told the local Eugene media in August .

Perich earned a starting role on the Ducks defense, and he leads the team with 16 total tackles through three weeks. But analyzing his performance requires more context. He has seemingly corrected the tackling issues he had last year, with zero missed tackles so far this fall, but his coverage has statistically floundered.

Perich has 92 coverage snaps so far this season, and he has graded at 58.0, according to PFF. He has allowed a 126.2 passer rating into his coverage. Oregon's defense struggled in its first two games against Boise State and Oklahoma State, before a blowout win last week against FCS Portland State.
An anonymous Big Ten coach was even quoted by The Athletic as saying that Perich "isn't the same caliber player" as Dillon Thieneman, the Ducks safety who was selected by the Bears in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and that Perich is "really struggling."

After an underwhelming start to the season, criticism of Perich has grown online. Some people from the Ducks' fan base are questioning why they let safety Kingston Lopa follow former defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi to Cal, and others are calling for five-star freshman Jett Washington to see a bigger role.
"I've seen enough from Koi Perich. Get my dawg Jett on the field. Kid has it man you can just tell," one Oregon fan wrote on X.
"Koi Perich has shown me absolutely nothing good so far this year," another Ducks fan mentioned.
Oregon began the season as the preseason No. 2 team in the country, but they've fallen all the way down to No. 20. They certainly have the talent to be a championship contender, as Perich thought, but they have a small margin of error in Big Ten play to prove it.

Perich will look to block out the noise this week as Oregon has a huge game on the road against No. 12 USC. A loss to the Trojans and a 2-2 start to the season would only make the criticism around Perich's transfer decision louder — not just here in Minnesota, but also in Eugene.
