The Celtics are bringing in some reinforcements for their shorthanded frontcourt. The team intends to sign Charles Bassey to a 10-day contract, a league source confirmed to MassLive on Saturday. The news was first reported by Michael Scotto of Hoopshype .
Boston is obligated to sign two players on Sunday per NBA rules after keeping their roster at 12 players for the last two weeks to help stay under the luxury tax line. The Celtics lost Nikola Vucevic last week to a broken finger until at least April so they will turn to a familiar face in Bassey to provide some added depth for the short term. The big man spent time with the Celtics Summer League team in 2025, averaging 15.3 points and 11.0 rebounds in Las Vegas but did not get a deal with Boston at the time due to their full roster.
Instead, the Hawks signed Bassey to a training camp contract after his strong summer in Boston, but he was cut before the start of the regular season. He has had stint with both the Grizzlies and 76ers this season after signing 10-day contracts with both teams. His last deal expired with the Sixers last month, which has made him a free agent since the All-Star Break. He's spent the majority of his year in the G-League with the Santa Cruz Warriors and Delaware Blue Hens, averaging 20.5 points and 12.4 rebounds per game.
Bassey was originally drafted by the Sixers with the No. 53 overall pick in 2021 and had spent his last three seasons as a backup center for the Spurs. He posted 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last year while playing 10.4 minutes per night in 36 appearances.
The 6-foot-10 center will join a Celtics bench that includes Luka Garza and Amari Williams , along with an injured Vucevic as depth options at center behind Neemias Queta . Boston will need to sign a second player on Sunday in addition to Bassey to get back up to 14 players on their 15-man roster.
