Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Alex Bregman have been in contact this offseason but the conversations have focused on family, not his free agency.
Bregman opted out of the final two years of his three-year, $120 million contract with Boston to become a free agent when the offseason began but both sides are interested in a reunion.
“One thing I learned last year throughout the process, less is more in certain situations,” Cora said at the MLB Winter Meetings on Tuesday. “And our relationship has kept growing. It grew last year. We became closer than in the past, and I love the kid. I love his family. He feels the same way about mine. So most of the time it’s about how the kids are doing, how soccer is going, how his workouts are going. And we leave it at that.”
Earlier in the day, Bregman’s agent Scott Boras said “the dialogue continues” with the Red Sox regarding Bregman .
“Everyone is aware that Bregman is something special and different, other than his performance,” Boras said. “You’re talking about one of the few regular everyday players that has eight consecutive postseason appearances. So, in October, it’s Alex in Wonderland. And it’s a Bregularly-scheduled event, no doubt.”
Cora has kept up with Bregman’s workout videos on Instagram.
“He invests in himself,” Cora said. “And he believes in himself and he knows that this is a big offseason for him physically. He was banged up last year. He needs to improve in that area. I’ve been joking with him. He looks fast now, although he’s not.”
The 31-year-old third baseman finished 2025 with an .821 OPS. He slugged .553 with 11 home runs in 51 games (226 plate appearances) before suffering a right quad strain that caused him to miss 43 games from May 24-July 11. He slugged just .386 with seven home runs in 63 games (269 plate appearances) after being activated from the injured list.
Bregman was known for strong leadership in the Red Sox clubhouse and helped Boston to its first playoff berth since 2021.
“Alex earned the right contract-wise to opt out and see what’s going on,” Cora said. “And we know he was very important last year and there’s a lot of leaders out there who are good players, too. So we’ll see what the future holds.”
