Brandon Aiyuk could be exactly the type of receiver Aaron Rodgers needs to revive the Pittsburgh Steelers' inconsistent passing attack . As the former All-Pro takes steps toward a return to the NFL, Pittsburgh has another chance to pursue a player whose skill set addresses one of its most frustrating offensive weaknesses.
Aiyuk reportedly filed for reinstatement Wednesday and plans to report to San Francisco's facility Friday. The 49ers could trade or release him, potentially reopening a door Pittsburgh nearly walked through in 2024. General manager Omar Khan already knows the player, and the Steelers' ongoing wide receiver problems make revisiting that interest reasonable.
Rodgers hasn't received enough help from his wideouts through eight games. DK Metcalf leads Pittsburgh with 378 receiving yards despite drawing 64 targets. He's caught just 33 passes, while rookie Germie Bernard has contributed 284 yards on 32 receptions.
Those numbers reflect an offense struggling to create consistent opportunities downfield. Aiyuk wouldn't fix everything, but his route running could address a problem Pittsburgh hasn't solved with its existing personnel.
Metcalf's inability to consistently shake coverage has become a significant obstacle. An October 28 analysis of tracking data placed his average separation at 2.48 yards through Week 7, ranking in the 27th percentile among receivers.
Metcalf has never relied primarily on separation to dominate. His physicality, size, and ability to threaten defenses vertically are his strengths. But expecting him to consistently win with precise route running doesn't maximize those traits.
Bernard has provided some relief, averaging 3.7 yards of separation through Week 8, although his shorter routes make direct comparisons misleading. Michael Pittman Jr. remains on the roster with an expected return date of Nov. 15.
Aiyuk, 28, was selected by the 49ers with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and developed into one of the league's most polished route-runners. His 2023 All-Pro campaign produced 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. More importantly, he consistently disguised routes, accelerated through breaks, and attacked defensive leverage to create throwing windows.
Rodgers thrives when receivers arrive at predictable spots with precise timing. Under Mike McCarthy, Aiyuk could become a valuable option on digs, crossers, and intermediate in-breaking routes, allowing Rodgers to anticipate openings rather than depend on contested catches.
Metcalf would benefit from another established threat commanding defensive attention. Pittsburgh's struggles to maximize its top receiver have exposed the limitations of building an attack around one physically gifted wideout.
Aiyuk could work underneath and across the middle while Metcalf stretches coverage vertically. That combination would give McCarthy more flexibility and force defenses to account for two different receiving styles.
Pittsburgh's prior pursuit of Aiyuk also provides a basis for renewed interest, although there's no confirmation that the Steelers are currently negotiating for him.
Aiyuk's health remains the obvious concern. He hasn't played since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2024, making an immediate return to All-Pro form far from guaranteed.
Rodgers is also playing what he has said will be his final NFL season. Pittsburgh can't afford to surrender significant draft capital for a receiver who might need considerable time to regain his explosiveness.
Khan should investigate Aiyuk's availability, medical outlook, and acquisition cost before the November 10 trade deadline. If the price reflects two years away from football, pairing his route-running ability with Metcalf's physical tools could be the smartest receiving upgrade Pittsburgh makes for Rodgers' final playoff push.
