Brandon Tanev suddenly available after unexpected NHL decision
The NHL preseason roster crunch is officially underway, and with it comes a wave of difficult decisions for front offices across the league, but one name on the waiver wire is turning heads more than most.
Brandon Tanev , a fan favorite known for his relentless energy and physical style of play, has reportedly been placed on waivers.
The move comes during the annual September roster trimming period, when teams must pare down their lineups ahead of the regular season. Placing a recognizable name like Tanev on waivers signals that the organization is prioritizing youth or cap flexibility heading into the 2026-27 campaign.

Tanev built a reputation as one of the league's most tenacious forecheckers during stints with the Winnipeg Jets , Pittsburgh Penguins , and Seattle Kraken . His willingness to block shots, throw hits, and chase down every loose puck made him a beloved teammate and a nightmare for opposing defensemen.
However, the business side of hockey rarely accounts for heart alone. As rosters evolve and salary cap considerations tighten, veterans like Tanev can find themselves on the outside looking in, regardless of their contributions in previous seasons.
If Tanev clears waivers, he could be assigned to the minor leagues or become a candidate for a trade. There is also the possibility that another team claims him outright, giving him a fresh opportunity elsewhere. Players with his combination of speed, physicality, and penalty-killing ability tend to attract interest, even when their original club decides to move on.
The waiver wire can be unpredictable at this stage of the preseason. Some big names pass through unclaimed, while others get scooped up within hours. Tanev's situation will be worth monitoring closely over the next 24 hours as the waiver period plays out.

The move serves as another reminder that no roster spot is guaranteed in the NHL, no matter how established the player. What comes next for Tanev could depend entirely on which teams see a fit for his particular skill set as opening night approaches.
