A Devastating Blow to the Rotation
The Atlanta Braves just lost two of their most promising right-handers for the rest of the year. Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep will both undergo season-ending surgeries after setbacks in their rehab from earlier elbow procedures, according to Yahoo Sports . This news hits hard for a team that already relies heavily on its starters. The Braves confirmed both pitchers need new operations to fix issues that flared up during their throwing progressions.

Waldrep's case is particularly grim. He will require Tommy John surgery, a procedure that often sidelines pitchers for a full year or more. This could keep him out until the 2027 season. Schwellenbach had surgery to remove bone spurs back in February, but the problem returned. His new procedure will address more bone spurs in his right elbow. Both players felt discomfort while throwing, leading to MRIs that showed the damage was too severe to ignore.
Manager Walt Weiss admitted he was caught off guard by the timing. He noted the guys were going through their throwing progressions when the issues arose before the team's game against Colorado . The recovery path for both men had been rocky. Weiss noted they have had a very uneven road back since spring training. Even with the bad news, the team did their due diligence. They received multiple opinions from the best doctors in the country before deciding on the surgeries.
The Strider Shadow Grows Longer
The pain does not stop with these two young arms. Spencer Strider, suffering from right elbow inflammation since June 13, is also absent from the rotation due to his time on the injured list. His return looks less likely with every passing day. Weiss gave a blunt assessment of Strider's chances before Friday night's game, noting that the window for his return is getting smaller.

He did not want to completely shut the door, but the odds are not in Atlanta's favor. Weiss explained that while he would not dismiss the possibility entirely, he considered it a long shot. This comment adds a layer of dread for fans hoping for a full-strength staff in October. The loss of Schwellenbach and Waldrep means the Braves lose potential depth they desperately need. If Strider cannot return, the team faces a thin rotation as they prepare for the playoffs.
The NL East-leading Braves now have to find answers in their bullpen or call up unproven arms from the minors. The timing could not be worse. These injuries rob the team of potential depth right when the playoff push heats up. Uncertainty continues to grip the team as surgery dates remain unset for now. The medical staff will likely take their time to ensure the pitchers are fully healed before rushing them back.
The road to the World Series just got much bumpier for Atlanta. A deep rotation was one of the team's biggest strengths entering the season. Now, that strength is gone. The franchise has a history of pitching excellence. They need that same depth to survive a grueling postseason. Losing three potential starters in one season is a rare and painful event.
Manager Weiss tried to explain why things went wrong. He said that if things aren't right, it's gonna flare up again and that's what happened with both guys. It is a simple truth that hurts to hear. The players worked hard, but their bodies could not handle the stress. The Braves must now pivot quickly. They will look to their bullpen and any available call-ups to fill the void. The season is not over, but the margin for error has vanished.

Fans will watch closely to see who steps up next. The front office might need to make a move at the trade deadline, though the market for pitchers is often thin. Every remaining healthy arm becomes a gold mine. The team cannot afford to wait for these three pitchers to heal.
