- Braves Starting Pitchers Face Season-Ending Surgeries

The Atlanta Braves just lost two starting pitchers before the 2027 season even began, and the news hit hard on a Friday in late August. Hurston Waldrep will undergo Tommy John surgery, which means he is out for the entire 2027 campaign. This is a massive blow for a team that already has major holes in its rotation. The pain is real, but the timeline is clear. Waldrep won't pitch a single inning next year.
Then there's Spencer Schwellenbach , who faces an even stranger situation. He'll have surgery on the same elbow he fractured just last year. It's rare for a pitcher to break an elbow, let alone get hurt in the exact same spot twice in two years. According to Battery Power , there's no set timetable for his return yet. He hasn't even made his debut for the 2026 season. The uncertainty here is worse than the injury itself.

A Rotation in Free Fall
The pitching staff is taking hit after hit, and the losses are piling up fast. The Braves still haven't officially said that Spencer Strider 's season is done, even though everyone assumed he was out since June. Mark Bowman reported this update on social media on August 28, 2026. The team is silent, but the math says they're in trouble. You can't win a championship without healthy arms to start games.
Waldrep last pitched in the majors in early July before getting sent down to the Gwinnett Stripers. Schwellenbach has yet to throw a pitch this year. Both men are now headed to the operating table. The 2026 season is already a grind, and the 2027 outlook just got darker. The front office is in a crisis.
They need to find answers fast, or the rotation will collapse.

Small Wins in a Dark Week
There's some good news, but it feels small against the backdrop of these surgeries. The Braves kicked off their series against the Colorado Rockies with a 6-4 win. On Thursday, Luis Guanipa hit a home run for the Rome Emperors, demonstrating that the farm system remains alive. These minor league wins are nice, but they don't fill the void in the big league rotation. The team needs big league arms, not just a promising kid in the minors.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are activating lefty Max Fried today after he hit the injured list on August 17. It's a stark contrast to see a rival bring a star back while the Braves lose two more. Fried is back, but the Braves are losing their future. The gap is widening, and the pressure is on the remaining healthy pitchers to carry the load. They can't afford to give up even one more start.
The Long Road Ahead
Recovery from Tommy John surgery usually takes 12 to 18 months. Waldrep will miss all of 2027, and his 2028 return is not guaranteed. Schwellenbach's path is even murkier since he's dealing with a re-injury. The Braves are hoping all goes well on the recovery front for Waldrep and Schwellenbach. Hope is free, but it doesn't win games. The team needs a plan that doesn't rely on hope.
The 2021 championship legacy is safe, but the window to defend it is closing fast.
