- Braxton Berrios earned the Giants’ trust but still needs the ball

Braxton Berrios finally has a full-time place on the Giants' 53-man roster. New York signed him off the practice squad Tuesday after using the available standard elevations, on the same day it released Odell Beckham Jr. That gives Berrios a job beyond being the receiver waiting for a weekly call-up.
It does not automatically give him targets. Berrios has played in three games this season without a reception. He can help in the return game, and there is value in keeping a reliable returner active. But the Giants' passing game has produced no touchdowns with Jameis Winston so far. I would find out whether Berrios can give them a few easy completions from the slot.
No one needs to build an offense around Berrios. A quick out, a shallow cross or a designed touch might be enough to make Arizona's linebackers defend more than the run. Those are normal plays for a slot receiver, not a promise that Berrios will transform the unit. If he gets three useful touches, that is three more chances to keep a drive alive.
New York already made a bigger bet on its pass-catching group. Isaiah Likely's arrival gives the offense another target, and Cam Skattebo remains central to the ground game. Berrios can fit around those players without taking their work away. The question is whether the staff sees him as an offensive piece or strictly a return specialist.

He has earned a roster spot. Now he has to earn snaps that involve the ball moving toward the end zone. After four field goals against Tennessee, the Giants should be willing to try something modest before asking Winston to solve everything with difficult throws.

The Cardinals game is a reasonable place to start. A single well-designed series would tell the Giants more about Berrios' offensive value than another week of leaving him on the sideline.
