- Brendan Sorsby ruling confirms that the NCAA is no longer relevant
The biggest story in college football this week has been surrounding Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby . After previously being ruled ineligible for the 2026 season by the NCAA for gambling on his team's games while he was at Indiana, on Monday, a court overturned the decision and ruled that Sorsby is eligible to play this fall .
Naturally, the ruling has drawn a ton of criticism. Many have noted that, unlike in many other NCAA eligibility cases, allowing a player with a significant history of gambling on the sport to play potentially compromises the integrity of games.

Obviously, this situation is a massive problem in its own right. However, it has also opened the door to an even bigger issue: The NCAA is effectively no longer able to enforce its own rules.
While pretty much every college sports fan would agree that the NCAA has been in the wrong countless times over the years, in this instance, the majority of the public was actually on its side. This begs the question: If the NCAA cannot enforce even its rules in case where a seemingly blatant and significant violation took place, what purpose does it even serve?
The Sorsby ruling confirmed a sentiment that has been growing in the minds of fans for several years now: The NCAA is no longer at all relevant to major college football. In other sports (and lower levels of football), it at least organizes the postseason championships, but with FBS football, the College Football Playoff fulfills that purpose.
In other words, the NCAA is now effectively an obsolete organization. If it collapsed tomorrow, major college football would effectively be unchanged.

We have certainly come a long way from 2010, when the NCAA banned the Trojans from the postseason for two years and took away 30 scholarships for Reggie Bush 's parents receiving free rent. On behalf of USC fans who remember that day, I would like to share the following message for the NCAA:
Good freaking riddance.
