A Major League team can never have enough catching depth. Especially entering spring training.
The Milwaukee Brewers applied that way of thinking by signing Reese McGuire to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training on Wednesday. McGuire, 30, is an eight-year veteran catcher who has spent time with four clubs, mainly the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox .
He hit a career high of nine home runs in just 44 games with the Chicago Cubs in 2025 and is a former first-round pick out of high school in 2014. McGuire grades out positively in pitch framing and throwing ability behind the plate.
Milwaukee's catching situation
As the Brewers' roster stands, McGuire has a good shot of making the Opening Day roster as the backup catcher to William Contreras .
Jeferson Quero is the only other backstop listed on the 40-man roster, but he has just 58 games of experience at Triple-A and turned 23 in October.
The backup role is one McGuire may be comfortable with. He was Christian Vazquez and Connor Wong 's backup during his three seasons with the Red Sox from 2022-24.
