Head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided updates on both players as Dallas works through its latest injury concerns. Ferguson is dealing with an ankle injury, while Schoonmaker has been recovering from a groin issue that kept him out of the Cowboys' previous game.
According to the Cowboys' official injury updates , Ferguson received encouraging news after undergoing medical examinations. Schottenheimer said the tests came back clean, leaving the team hopeful that the tight end could return to practice during the week.
Schoonmaker also has a chance to return after missing the 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. His progress in practice will be important in determining whether he can suit up against Indianapolis.
Cowboys Need Their Tight End Depth Against Colts
Ferguson's potential return would be particularly important for quarterback Dak Prescott. The veteran tight end has established himself as a reliable option in Dallas' passing game, especially when the offense needs a dependable target over the middle.
Schoonmaker's availability would provide another option at the position. With both players unavailable against Arizona, Brevyn Spann-Ford and James Mitchell handled the tight end responsibilities. Mitchell even recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown during the defeat.

The Cowboys cannot afford to overlook their depth concerns after allowing Arizona to erase a two-score deficit and win in overtime. Dallas now sits at 3-5 and needs a stronger performance to avoid falling further behind in the NFC East.
The Cowboys travel to face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, November 8 . Ferguson's practice participation and Schoonmaker's recovery will offer a clearer indication of how much help Dallas can expect.
For Schottenheimer, getting both tight ends closer to full health would provide Prescott with more options as the Cowboys look to respond to their latest setback.
