Real Madrid are keeping a close watch on Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as part of their longer-term planning for life after Thibaut Courtois, according to Fichajes . The situation is described as one of ongoing monitoring rather than any immediate move, but Verbruggen's name is firmly in the conversation as the Spanish giants assess future options between the posts.
The 24-year-old has a contract at Brighton until 30 June 2028, which gives the Premier League club a strong position and ensures that any serious approach would be shaped by both timing and price. At this stage, there is no suggestion of an active negotiation, and that feels consistent with Real Madrid's wider goalkeeping picture.
Interest is said to have intensified again after Brighton's win at Manchester City on 31 October, when Verbruggen produced a standout display at the Etihad. He preserved Brighton's lead and turned away a number of dangerous chances, delivering the type of high-pressure performance that naturally attracts attention from Europe's elite recruitment departments.
His start to the 2026-27 Premier League season has only strengthened that profile. Nine league starts, six clean sheets and a save percentage close to 79 per cent point to a goalkeeper growing in authority and consistency. For a club like Real Madrid, those metrics matter, and so does the context in which they are being produced.
Verbruggen has been on an upward trajectory for some time. Since joining Brighton from Anderlecht in July 2023 on a five-year deal, he has developed steadily. After sharing responsibilities in his first campaign, he established himself during 2024-25, when he featured in 36 Premier League matches. His rise has carried onto the international stage too, where he has become the regular goalkeeper for the Netherlands.

There is no urgency at the Bernabeu. Courtois remains the undisputed No 1 and, at 34, is still central to Real Madrid's plans. His current contract runs to 2027, while talks over an extension by a further year, until 30 June 2028, are understood to be at an advanced stage. That timeline gives the club breathing space to continue assessing younger candidates without being forced into an early decision.
Verbruggen fits the profile of a goalkeeper who could be revisited later. By the summer of 2028, assuming no new Brighton renewal before then, he would still be only 25. That age, combined with significant Premier League and international experience, would make him an especially attractive proposition if Real Madrid choose to move.
His market value is said to be around €40 million, based on external estimates, although no official asking price has been set by Brighton. Other names remain under consideration, including Gregor Kobel, while Gianluigi Donnarumma is also viewed as a prominent option in some circles. Real Madrid's approach, though, appears deliberately broad and measured.
Another important part of the equation is Andriy Lunin. The Ukraine international is under contract until 2030 following the renewal announced in September 2024, yet that does not automatically make him Courtois' eventual successor. His presence offers depth and quality, but it does not close the door on external recruitment if the club decide a different profile is needed.
That leaves Verbruggen in a familiar position for top-level talent, admired, tracked and potentially relevant to a major decision further down the line. For Brighton, there is no immediate pressure to act. They hold a valuable asset on a long contract, and his recent performances only reinforce their leverage.
For Real Madrid, this is a story to file under strategic planning rather than imminent transfer activity. Verbruggen is being watched closely, his development is being noted, and the club have time on their side before deciding whether that admiration should become something more concrete.
This is exactly the sort of report that makes you uneasy, even if nothing is close right now. Bart Verbruggen has become such an important figure for Brighton, and when clubs like Real Madrid are mentioned, supporters know how these things can build over time. It starts with monitoring, then admiration, then suddenly there is a genuine opening.
The reassuring part is Brighton's contract position. Having him tied down until 2028 matters, and it gives the club a degree of control. That said, control only lasts as long as the player is happy and the project remains convincing. If he keeps delivering at this level, bigger clubs will keep circling. That is the reality.
There should also be some pride in this. Brighton identified him early, developed him properly and gave him the platform to become one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in Europe. That recruitment model has served the club brilliantly, but it always carries a cost, eventually the best players draw the biggest attention.
The hope now is simple. Keep him settled, keep building a competitive side in front of him, and make sure Brighton are aiming high enough that staying feels as exciting as leaving. If Verbruggen believes he can achieve something significant where he is, then interest from elsewhere becomes easier to resist, at least for a while.
